more audio always uploading…

After more than 30 years in the business you tend to have quite a library of audio. I’m uploading as fast as I can so stay tuned as more and more appears on the site.

XM Satellite Radio

XM’s official “launch of service” date was September 25, 2001. We were scheduled to launch on September 12th, 2001 – but the attacks of September 11th pushed everything back.

So on the 25th, all of the channels, which had been soft launched, shut down – the service went silent and at 12:30pm CEO Hugh Panero hit the switch and we all came back to life. I was on the USA Today all news channel. The following audio is the “first” newscast for that channel:

My final newscast on XM After eight years at XM, I was released by the newly merged XM and Sirius. I had been told several months prior to this day – but had been asked to stay on through the conclusion of the 2008 Presidential election. This is the final hour of my morning show on POTUS 08 that day. We really didn’t do anything different to mark the occasion. However, while we normally played a news topical montage at the open of the show – this day I chose simply to play a song which I felt captured the emotion, for me, of the moment. And I do say good-bye at the very end of the cast:

The USA Today Channel The first channel I worked on for XM was The USA Today Channel, an all news channel based on the content of the newspaper. This was the demo we produced to lock the deal with the paper.

9-11 Attacks As I mentioned, we were supposed to have the official launch on September 12th, 2001. As such, we were on the air and broadcasting on September 11th. Here is a portion of the 14 or so hours of September 11th coverage we broadcast on The USA Today Channel on XM:

The Preview Channel show Channel 1 on XM was the “preview” channel. When you bought a radio or a car with a radio you could hear this channel even if you didn’t subscribe. It was designed to get you to subscribe. Mostly it was a series of channel promos. Ben Krech and I made this program for the channel.

Rock The Vote Awards Dinner In 2005, we broadcast the Rock The Vote annual awards dinner. It was pretty brutal, a live solo anchor job during which there were huge chucks of time where I just had to adlib while Megan Robertson, my producer, tried to snag another guest. The most interesting thing about this broadcast is that I interviewed both Senators John McCain and Barack Obama – who, as you know, would wind up facing off in three years in the Presidential election.
